Starting from ball bearings (52100), holed layers of
1010 (0.5mm thick) from a window shielding and layers of 1085 (0.5mm
thick), I decided to make a Sandwich style damascus. To make the weld
for the damascus I modified steel pipe to work as container, encapsulating
the different steels. Measures for the container are 1 1/4"x1
1/4 x 4" (Picture 1)
I used the holes on the 1085 layers to place the ball bearing and
keep them in place (Picture 2)
Then I alternated the layers until I got the final one in 1085 (Picture

To finish the can, I welded the cover of the steel pipe before placing
the container in the oven. (Picture 4)
After heating, I hammered hard and worked as I described on my
Making Damascus Steel tutorial to finish the blade. |
